A Must-See Stop in the American West


Devils Tower is one of those places that immediately stands out, even from a distance. Rising dramatically out of the surrounding Wyoming prairie, it feels both unexpected and unforgettable in person. It is one of those destinations that photos never fully prepare you for.


The drive out to Devils Tower is part of the experience. You are surrounded by wide open landscapes, long stretches of quiet highway, and that classic Wyoming feeling of space and stillness. As you get closer, the tower slowly comes into view and becomes more and more striking against the horizon.


Once you arrive, the scale of it really hits you. Devils Tower rises 867 feet above the surrounding land and is made of unique igneous rock formations that have drawn visitors for generations. It was also the first United States National Monument, designated in 1906, which adds to its historical significance.


One of the most memorable parts of visiting is simply taking it in from different viewpoints around the base. Each angle shows a slightly different side of the formation, and the landscape around it feels quiet and grounded. Even without doing a long hike, there is still plenty to experience just by walking the short paths and stopping at overlooks.


Wildlife is another highlight of the area. Prairie dogs are commonly seen near the entrance area, and the surrounding land is home to deer and a variety of birds. The natural environment feels untouched in many ways, which adds to the peaceful atmosphere.


What makes Devils Tower so special is not just its appearance, but the feeling it gives you while you are there. It is calm, open, and deeply tied to the landscape around it. It is a place that encourages you to slow down, take your time, and really look at where you are.

Know Before You Go: Visiting Devils Tower


Hours

Devils Tower National Monument is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, so you can visit anytime. The visitor center typically operates during daytime hours, usually around 9 AM to 5 PM, though seasonal hours can vary.


Entrance Fee
  • $25 per vehicle (includes everyone in your car and is valid for 7 days)
  • $20 for motorcycles
  • $15 per person if entering by foot or bicycle
  • Kids 15 and under are free


Best Time to Visit

If you want fewer crowds and softer light for photos, I would recommend visiting early morning or later in the evening. Summer afternoons can get busy, especially between 10 AM and 3 PM.


Travel Tip

I definitely recommend staying nearby instead of making it just a quick stop. There are so many peaceful places around the area, and seeing Devils Tower at different times of day makes the experience feel even more special.
